Ladies and gentleman, we have an early candidate for Worst Movie of the Year, for which ever year this film comes out. Most likely 2010. Regardless, this is just awful. Abel Ferrara, a declining filmmaker who once made the amzing Bad Lieutenant, has signed on to direct a version of Jekyll & Hyde, starring Forest Whitaker and 50 Cent.
Yes, as in Curtis Jackson, one of the top five worst actors alive (If you can’t even play yourself in Get Rich or Die Tryin’ believably, you’re simply horrible), in an adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, one of my favorite stories ever. Listen: I respect the man’s business savvy and also quite enjoy his music, but he’s no triple threat. He makes Ludacris look like Sidney Poitier.
Does it get much worse than this? Doubtful. (More after the jump)
This news is a good look for Keanu Reeves, though. Just last week, news hit that Reeves is going to star in a different take on the Jekyll & Hyde tale, news that filled me with disbelief and annoyance. Now, however, I welcome the Reeves version—-a least a promising young director, Denmark native Nicolas Winding Refn (he of the Pusher action trilogy and well-buzzed-about hardcore prison drama Bronson notoriety) is attached to that one, and Reeves, while a lifeless drone of an actor nowadays, has given strong performances in the past.
50 Cent, whether he’s playing Mr. Hyde, or a friend of Whitaker’s Dr. Jekyll, or a hip-hop entrepreneur who gets roughed up by Hyde, should’ve never have been allowed into the casting room in the first place. Yes, his film will be a modern-day spin on the material, but that’s irrelevant. It’s not the idea of 50 in a horror period piece that angers me—-it’s the idea of 50 in any movie, let alone one that should ideally be an actor’s dream come true.
Hopefully this project comes, goes, and slips into Purgatory. And, before we put this one to bed, what’s up with Forest Whitaker? A Jekyll & Hyde film alongside 50? Some explaining needs to be done.
