In light of my current Eminem/Relapse fascination, posting this video feels strangely necessary. After all, Eminem and Cage went through that whole “Ken Kaniff skit, random diss lines in album cuts” back-and-forth during The Slim Shady LP days. And both of their new albums are largely downers.
If you were to ask me, “Who do you think is the most unfairly overlooked MC in hip-hop?” my answer would be undoubtedly be Cage, the underground’s scene longtime resident patient. A former drug addict, an actual mental patient, an amazing lyricist who never tackles a topic unidentifiable as “unpleasant.” His Movies for the Blind and Hell’s Winter album combo is like a two-headed monster high off illegal pharmeceuticals.
Cage’s biggest celebrity fan has been Shia Labeouf, who even mentioned a strong interest in pulling off a Cage biopic, calling the guy’s story to that of Raging Bull. They’re friends, too, which explains how Cage got Labeouf to make his directorial debut with the video for “I Never Knew You,” the first single off of Cage’s soon-to-hit Depart From Me record. Like I did with Relapse, I may have to scribble random thoughts about Depart From Me in the weeks to come; it’s a head-smacking, depressing album that begs for analysis.
The rather impressive video for “I Never Knew You” after the jump. Who knew that Shia Labeouf had such dark vision….
