……just in time for another Warner Bros. hopeful-blockbuster, this weekend’s Terminator Salvation.
Sherlock Holmes is the first big deal project that Robert Downey Jr. signed on to after Iron Man‘s huge out-the-gate success last year, and, by the looks of this trailer, it should be another platform for the guy to look effortlessly cool and witty. Jude Law as “Watson” looks like a good fit, but I’m expecting Law to be a mere footnote in this film, under the lead-man’s shadow. Do people even like Jude Law anymore? I never understood the guy’s appeal, but Sherlock Holmes could be the right way to regain some of his gusto.
All that said, I’m actually unsure about this trailer. Being a fan of 2008’s overcrowded-yet-fun Rock N Rolla, I’m glad to see Guy Ritchie getting a big commercial break here. Ritchie’s style touches are clearly present, with the trailer’s slow-motion punches to the face and the sideway-angle shot of Rachel McAdams (who looks sexy as ever in that old-school skirt). This looks too much like a hokey hybrid of the Pirates of the Caribbean films and the miserable League of Extraordinary Gentleman, though. Hopefully the final product will make an effort to include some interesting mystery and story amidst the flashy fight setpieces and snarky humor. Am I thinking too deeply into this? Possibly, but I can’t shake this feeling of familiarity.
