Say you’re Josh Brolin, an always-talented actor who has gone from C-list to Academy Award nominee over the course of two breakneck years. Your last project was last year’s multiple Oscar nominee Milk (for which you received your first ever individual nom). Agents and studios are hurling scripts at your front door on an hourly basis. You’re married to that glass of fine wine Diane Lane. Simply put, you’re the man. Life is good.
So what do you choose as your next project? A hopeful-blockbuster adaptation of DC Comics’ Jonah Hex, scheduled for August 6, 2010, that’s what. Not quite what you’d expect from Brolin’s current career trajectory, but the lure of a potential franchise can’t be easy to shun. I’ve never read a single page of Jonah Hex comic book series, though it does sound cool enough: Hex is a Confederate vet of the Civil War who scowls his way through the Wild Wild West, firing revolvers at a cavalcade of villains while battling alcoholism. One of those Sergio Leone/Clint Eastwood films on a potent blend of steroids and Moonshine.
These first spy shots of Brolin in full Hex-costume aren’t completely underwhelming, just nothing grand. The scarred right side of his face matches that of Hex in the comics, but looks weak by comparison. This being a major studio tentpole and all, I’d imagine that they’ll give the scars the Aaron Eckhart/Dark Knight post-production enhancement.
And, no…..I’m not going to crack a joke about how iffy the film’s director is: Jimmy Hayward, whose only other major credit is last year’s Horton Hears a Who! When you think of old West violence and antiheroics, you think of Horton. Of course. Benefit of the doubt has been given to the guy, though. For now.
After the jump, another shot of Brolin as Jonah Hex, as well as a shot of co-star Megan Fox in character:
