When Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza’s horror piledriver [REC] (2007) hits our DVD shelves on July 14, there’ll be a sketchy tagline bestowed upon the Spanish gem: “The movie that inspired Quarantine.” Now, as much as I like(d) last October’s Quarantine for not tarnishing [REC], that’s a total bullshit statement. Quarantine didn’t take inspiration from [REC]—-it took the entire story and the majority of its scenes and supplemented English-speaking actors. Just calling a spade a spade.
Regardless of the tagline, though, do yourselves a favor and just buy [REC] once it hits stores. Especially if you’ve yet to see Quarantine. [REC] is one of the best ten horror movies of the last decade—–believe that. Most likely ranking in the list’s top half.
As surprising and unnecessary as it may be, Rec 2 is already in the can, and there’s a second teaser trailer online as of today. The verdict: hold on to both your Dramamine and your heart, because this trailer is a doozy. Like that old computer game Doom, but with 400-horsepower-fast infected humans instead of alien monsters and shot with real people, not comp animation.
By the looks of things, Rec 2 may very well be the most dizzying of all cinema verite/”found footage” films to date. Hopefully the finished feature is easier to follow, because all I’m seeing here is running guns-attached-arms, snarling blurs of rabid people, and red life liquid. All cool things, but would be even cooler if made more visible.
Rec 2‘s insane teaser can be found after the jump:
Rec 2 is looking at an October 2009 release in Spain, so we won’t be able to see it around here until early 2010, the earliest. Mega bummer. Fucking passports.
