A month or so back, I posted a piece of concept art that may or may not have been an official “Mickey Rourke as Whiplash” design for Iron Man 2. It looks cool enough, a blend of Iron Man’s own suit and The Rocketeer, only given Rourke’s younger mug from the Angel Heart days. Turns out, though, that said design was nowhere even close to being legit. This morning, USA Today got our first peek at Rourke in Whiplash garb, courtesy of Iron Man overseer/director Jon Favreau, and here it is:
Immediate thoughts: This can’t be the full costume, right? Looks more like Rourke auditioning for the grittiest take on He-Man ever conceptualized than anything in the actual Iron Man universe. It’s not completely underwhelming, though—-the jailhouse tattoos on blast show some badass-ness, and the power-source on his chest shows that Whiplash won’t be too far off from Tony Stark/Iron Man in necessities. Yet, I still can’t shake the feeling that this is an early-stage Whiplash, and that by the film’s end we’ll see a bit more technical pizzazz in his look.
“The villain’s alter ego, Ivan Vanko, is a Russian who “has constructed his own version of a suit,” Favreau says. Among the creative innovations: a pair of whips, powered by the suit’s glowing chest piece, that are expected to keep Iron Man cracking……..This first image of the character shows Whiplash making an appearance at the Monaco Historic Grand Prix. Favreau as usual is tight-lipped about plot points and declines to discuss whether the big-screen Whiplash is, as in the Marvel Comics, a weapons designer who works for Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell), a competitor of Tony Stark/Iron Man.”
Soon to come, I’m sure, will be our first shots of the great Sam Rockwell as “Justin Hammer” and, the real money one, Scarlett Johannson as “Black Widow.” Stay tuned…..
