Let me preface this post with this: if you know me well, then you’re fully aware that I’m a sucker for zombie films. Good or bad. The great ones that mask social commentary with chewed-into intestines, the shitty C-grade messes that have the undead creatures running with the speed of back-in-the-day Carl Lewis. George A. Romero to the 3D bastardizations of his canon. The films I’d gladly recommend to the guiltiest of cheap pleasures.
It’s sad, honestly, that any news of fresh zombie films excites me. When one comes along that seems to have everything going for it, however, you can imagine my energy level. Case in point: Zombieland, an upcoming horror-comedy from director Ruben Fleischer. You could make the obvious parallel to Shaun of the Dead, but then you’d be noticeably off the mark. Shaun takes place as the zombie outbreak begins; Zombieland picks up after the devastation, pitting two opposite-tempered survivors (Jesse Eisenberg’s pussy teenager, Woody Harrelson’s trigger-happy cowboy) against the flesheaters and each other. All for the laughs, though. With female co-starring help from Little Miss Sunshine‘s Abigail Breslin, redheaded cutie Emma Stone, and blonde firestarter Amber Heard. And, reportedly, a cameo from Bill Murray as a zombie.
Harrelson chewing scenery with wiseass one-liners and baseball bats to zombies’ heads. The best “neurotic, awkward dude” actor of his generation, Jesse Eisenberg (that’s right, Michael Cera…..he’s got your number), killing creeps for sleeping on his fine leading man work in Adventureland. Emma Stone and Amber Heard, just looking hot. Zombies with gore-pushing makeup.
Zombieland should have this one in the bag. Hope reserved until October 9 (the same day as Shutter Island….you’ll know where to find me all weekend).
After the jump, peep the first Zombieland images that Ain’t It Cool News was fortunate enough to receive:
