There’s really no reason why I should be even the least bit excited about The Stepfather, a PG-13, balls-cut-off, Gossip Girl-fanbase-pleasing remake of the 1987 horror-thriller starring Terry “John Locke” O’Quinn. Let’s breeze through this new version’s stat sheet—-the director (Nelson McCormick) is coming off the excruciatingly-lame Prom Night remake, as is the film’s screenwriter (J.S. Carbone); the lead is one of those pretty nancy-boys from the above-referenced Gossip Girl (Penn Badgley); and, yes, it’s another fucking remake.
So imagine my shameful astonishment at this sad fact: after just watching this newly-dropped trailer (which you should check out quickly, before it’s taken down by those in distribution authority), I’m actually more interested than anticipated. By no means does this look like a great film, but there’s a harder-than-expected tone to the thing that has my senses heightened. Especially that last shot with the dangling buzzsaw. Nip/Tuck‘s Dylan Baker looks pretty damn convincing as the murderous stepdad, and I’d totally forgotten that hotter-than-lava Amber Heard was co-starring in this.
Bonus scenes from the original....first, the film's great opening:
Now, a “nice” death scene:
