The awesome trailer for ZOMBIELAND is upon us
June 19, 2009 by Matt Barone
I was on the verge of doing one of my weekly “critical consensus gathering” posts for Harold Ramis’ Year One, but then I the light-bulb flickered above the brow, leading to this realization—–Year One looks like total shit, and, according the reviews so far, it apparently is total shit, so why waste any time discussing it? You know it’s wack news when you’re laughing harder at the trailer for G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra than you are Year One‘s on Super Bowl Sunday, which was totally the case for yours truly. Better to let that one shrivel up and disappear.
Besides, it’s much more productive to spotlight Ruben Fleischer’s wicked-looking Zombieland. Last week brought some promising stills, but tonight brings forth the film’s first trailer, and it’s sublime. Initially, I feared that Zombieland would be a poor man’s Shaun of the Dead, a knockoff that should’ve never seen the greenlight of day. But, as this trailer proves, I was dead wrong. Name a recent trailer that made its film seem like more smiley fun than this one, and I’ll laugh in your direction and dismiss the response.
Zombieland‘s tone, based off this preview, is money. The “zombie kill of the week” bit works like a charm, and seeing Jesse Eisenberg basically playing the exact same character from Adventureland if that character quit his amusement park job to hunt down the undead in said amusement park is a welcome treat. Emma Stone looks finer than ever, and Woody Harrelson has the perfect role to smash his pedal to the metal. The speed-up/slow-down camera tricks look a bit too Guy Ritchie, but here’s to hoping that’s only a trailer gimmick. Let the actual film’s scenes run in real-time, Mr. Fleischer.
With Zombieland and Martin Scorcese’s Shutter Island to thank, could October 9 be the best opening day of the 2009? As far as I’m concerned, indeed. Check the Zombieland trailer after the jump:
