See, this is the problem with trailers—–they can be a total misdirection. Whether intentionally so, or tragically poor in execution, trailers are what bags of salt grains were meant for, ripe for the taking. Take this new preview for the comedy Couples Retreat, for instance. You have a cast that, on paper, is like a Dream Team of likeable personalities—-Vince Vaughn, Jon Favreau, Jason Bateman, Kristen Bell, Malin Akerman and Sex and the City‘s Kristin Davis. A premise that full of potential, following four feuding couples that plan on taking a resort vacation only to find out that it’s really a group therapy coven of relationship troubleshooting. Oh, and it’s the directorial debut of Ralphie from A Christmas Story (Peter Billingsley, as the government recognizes him).
What’s not to like, right? This trailer, unfortunately. Not that it’s terrible; in fact, it’s quite pleasant, welcoming. Enjoyable. But just not funny, at all. Not even snicker came out of my facial region. A half-smile or two, but that’s the extent. Almost as if the film’s makers relied on the natural charms of the cast to turn script-crap into gold bricks.
Forming a finite opinion off this trailer alone would be a douchebag move, of course, so I’ll reserve formal judgment until the movies comes out on October 9. See for yourselves, though, after the jump:
