While all of the awards talk and general fawning has been targeted at George Clooney‘s Up in the Air, my mom’s biggest crush has another strong-looking film coming out by year’s end that’s somewhat flying under the radar: Men Who Stare at Goats. As the title promises, it’s a Coen Brothers-esque comedy about an Iraq-situated reporter who happens across a military operation that’s attempting to use psychic powers to its war advantage. Which includes communicating with goats by grilling them down intensely. Clooney is great when playing the offbeat funnyman (see last year’s Burn After Reading), and the supporting cast here (Jeff Bridges, Kevin Spacey, Ewan McGregor) is diesel. Just watch the trailer; this is one of those projects that big-names take on for the sheer pleasure and amusement. Probably lowering their money demands. Laughing uncontrollably on set. Loving their jobs. At least I’d like to think so.
Men Who Stare at Goats is directed by Grant Heslov, a longtime friend and collaborator of Clooney’s. Today, the first poster hit, and it’s exactly what you’d hope for from a film called Men Who Stare at Goats, meaning it’s ludicrous and somewhat sublime.
After the trailer, the film’s trailer, which includes Clooney literally staring at a goat. Awesome:
