There’s absolutely no need for me to rehash the boulders of enthusiasm I’ve already bestowed on Martin Scorcese‘s upcoming Shutter Island adaptation. I’ve read Dennis Lehane‘s book three times now, and the unwavering experience each time leads me to believe that I should just christen the damn thing as my favorite book ever, for the time being. I know some people loathe it for its game-changing twist, but I for one appreciate the craft at work, how that twist is airtight once you go back and retrace the story’s steps. That it’s right out of the Falling Angel/Angel Heart playbook is also easy for me to bypass.
When Scorcese’s Shutter Island was pushed back from this October 2 weekend to February 2010 (the push happened in late August), I was furious. But the way that time seems to zoom by nowadays, February really isn’t all that far off. So I can wait. Impatiently, at best.
